We have the privilege of hosting Palestinian Activist and scholar, Yousef Aljamal at this special book launch at Paige’s for his recent publication; “If I Die.”

Later that evening he will be giving a lecture at the Davis Lecture theatre (7.30pm) before continuing his Aotearoa tour.

Yousef Aljamal is the Gaza coordinator at the Palestine Activism Program at the American Friends Service Committee. Aljamal is a refugee from Palestine. He recently received his PhD at the Middle East Institute at Sakarya University in Turkey. He put together “I Must Die,” an anthology of the writings of Dr. Refaat Alareer, his lecturer and close friend.

Here is a list of what we have been reading -

  • All That We Know by Shilo Kino

  • Books by Jane Austen

  • Books by The Bronte Sisters

  • I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

  • The Hidden Girl by Lucinda Riley

  • The Diary of Anne Frank

  • The Girl From London by Olivia Spooner

  • Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese

  • A Room Made of Leaves by Kate Grenville

  • The Mountain is You by Brianna Wiest

  • Books by Amy Rafferty

If anyone has a book to return, please do so immediately.  For efficient running of the library, we need books returned on time please. Kindly make contact if you are unable to. If you cannot make the meeting, please return the book as soon as you can. Do not leave it until your next book club as a person from another group will be waiting for your copy. To those of you who are unaware, there’s an old fashioned postal slot at ankle height in the street door of the children’s room.  Books that are not too bulky will fit through this slot, should the shop be closed when you are returning your book.

Our plan for the library this year is to expand our range of library books with an assortment of both fiction and non-fiction titles. We like to have our library filled with books that will generate excellent bookclub discussions. Here is our updated Book Lending Library List.

We hope you have all had a relaxing and restful holiday period with plenty of time to read.

Yours-in-pukapuka,

Lesley, Tanya and Rochelle
